Legislature passes bill to end Atlantic salmon farming

Atlantic salmon farms such as the one that collapsed near Cypress Island in Skagit County in August have limited time left to operate in the state.

The Legislature passed a bill Friday that will phase out such farms within a few years.

That bill now goes to Gov. Jay Inslee to sign.

Seven Atlantic salmon farms still operate in the state’s marine waters, including two still in place near Cypress Island and one near Hope Island.

All seven of those farms and the one that collapsed in August are owned by Cooke Aquaculture, an international fish farming company.
