FB NEWS – The American Farm Bureau Federation and Alabama Farmers Federation today presented Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) with AFBF’s Golden Plow award. The Golden Plow is the highest honor the organization gives to sitting members of Congress.
“Senator Shelby is a champion for agriculture. He consistently stands by policies that support and protect farmers and ranchers,” said AFBF Vice President Scott VanderWal. His leadership was key to passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act last year, VanderWal noted. The legislation provided much-needed disaster relief for farmers, made seed cotton eligible for farm support programs and laid the groundwork for improvements to dairy risk management. “Farm Bureau is grateful for his continued service to agriculture and rural America.”
The Alabama Farmers Federation endorsed Shelby for the award because of his commitment in Congress to issues important to farmers and ranchers. Alabama Farmers Federation appreciates that the senator’s priorities align with those of its members.
“Senator Shelby is a friend of famers and rural America,” said Jimmy Parnell, president, Alabama Farmers Federation. “His leadership on issues such as keeping the U.S. competitive in the global marketplace is appreciated and valued. When Farm Bureau members need to talk, Senator Shelby is always ready to listen.”
Shelby currently serves as chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee and as a member of the Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee, and Environment and Public Works Committee. Shelby’s work in the Senate includes working tirelessly to restore “regular order” to the appropriations process to complete bills on time. He is also a strong proponent of rural infrastructure improvements, regulatory reform and tax reform.
AFBF’s Golden Plow award recognizes members of Congress who exemplify agricultural leadership and support of Farm Bureau policies. Recipients are chosen for having a philosophy or record that demonstrates a commitment to sound agricultural policies supported by Farm Bureau, the private enterprise system, fiscal conservatism and reduced federal regulation of businesses and individuals.
